Sindh May Return to India Again Rajnath Singh’s Remark Sparks Fresh Debate

Defence Minister highlights civilisational ties and says borders can change with time

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh sparked widespread discussion after suggesting that Sindh could one day return to India, echoing sentiments long held within sections of the Sindhi community. Speaking at a cultural gathering, Singh emphasized that geopolitical boundaries are not permanent and that history has shown borders shifting with time and circumstances.

He said that despite the 1947 Partition, Sindh continues to hold deep spiritual, cultural, and emotional connections with India. Citing past viewpoints of senior leaders and scholars, Singh noted that many Sindhi families have never truly detached from the region’s heritage, language, and religious traditions.

The Defence Minister also referenced the significance of Indus-Sindhu civilisation, stating that its roots form an essential part of India’s ancient identity. He pointed out that even today, India’s national anthem includes the mention of Sindh, reflecting its historical place in the subcontinent’s cultural landscape.

Singh linked these sentiments to India’s commitment to safeguard persecuted communities in the region, reiterating that the country will always stand by those facing religious or political oppression. His statement, however, has added a new dimension to the ongoing political and diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan.

While many in the Sindhi community welcomed the remarks as a recognition of their legacy, critics view the statement as politically charged. Analysts say the comments could have deeper strategic implications at a time when regional dynamics are already sensitive.

The remark has triggered reactions from multiple quarters, making Sindh’s historical and geopolitical relevance a renewed subject of public debate.
