How Does INS Vikrant Stack Up Against Chinese And US Aircraft Carriers?
- Fujian can carry more than 80,000 tonnes, which is almost twice as much as Vikrant. It is not yet in use, but it will soon be part of the naval fleet.
- With Fujian, China is likely to increase its presence in the South China Sea and Taiwan Straits, two areas where relations have been tense lately because of the visit of the US Speaker.
On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the Indian Navy its first aircraft carrier that was made in India. This was done by putting the INS Vikrant into service.
The launch of the INS Virant is a big step toward Atmanirbhar Bharat and will help India become self-sufficient in the defence sector.
The aircraft carrier is named after the ship that came before it. That ship was very important in the war with Pakistan in 1971.
With the launch of INS Vikrant, India now has two operational aircraft carriers in its fleet. This will improve India’s security at sea.
Comparing INS Vikrant with US & Chinese vessels
INS Vikrant
The INS Vikrant, which was made in India, is the biggest ship that has ever been designed and built in India. It is a masterpiece of engineering. It was made in the country, and it is 5–7 times bigger than any warship made there.
The ship has a range of 7500 Nautical Miles and has about 14 decks and 2,300 compartments. It is like a floating city. They can fit more than 1,700 crew members, and there are special rooms for women officers.
The aircraft carrier can hold 30 planes, each of which weighs 30 tonnes.
According to official information, TATA, L&T, Wartsila, and Kirloskar Pneumatics, as well as the public sector companies Bharat Electronics Limited, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, and Mishta Dhatu Nigam, were in charge of this huge ship (MIDHANI).
The aircraft carrier has the latest, most advanced technology and systems, as well as a full-fledged hospitality centre with 16 beds.
The INS Vikrant has three arrester wires and two runways for taking off and landing.
With the launch of the INS Vikrant, India joins a small group of countries like the US, UK, Russia, France, and China that are able to design and build aircraft carriers that can carry more than 40,000 tonnes.
A major newspaper said that the landing tests for MiG-29K fighter planes would start in November and end in the middle of 2023. By the end of 2023, INS Vikrant will be ready to go.
US’ USS Gerald R Ford
The United States still has more and stronger aircraft carriers than any other country. The USS Gerald R. Ford was the last ship to join the US Navy.
The USS Gerald R. Ford is the largest warship in the world. It was put into service in 2017 and can carry 112,000 tonnes of water.
It can hold almost three times as many crew members as the INS Vikrant, which is 4,500.
It can carry more than 75 planes, including some of the most dangerous ones, like the Lockheed Martin F-35, Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, and Sikorsky MH-60R helicopters.
China’s Fujian
In June of this year, at a ceremony in Shanghai called Fujian, China also unveiled its newest aircraft carrier.
Fujian is China’s first catapult aircraft carrier that was designed and built in China. It is similar to India’s INS Vikrant. China already has two ships that can carry fighter jets, so now the Asian Giant has three ships that can carry fighter jets.
Fujian can carry more than 80,000 tonnes, which is almost twice as much as Vikrant. It is not yet in use, but it will soon be part of the naval fleet.
With Fujian, China is likely to increase its presence in the South China Sea and Taiwan Straits, two areas where relations have been tense lately because of the visit of the US Speaker.
