Security Forces Intensify Hunt as Militants Cornered in Kashmir’s Forested Zones

Army and police launch coordinated operation in dense woodland belts to flush out trapped militants in Jammu and Kashmir.

Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have launched a large-scale counter-terror operation after receiving intelligence inputs about militants hiding in thickly forested regions of the Union Territory. The multi-agency operation, involving the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and paramilitary forces, has been underway in rugged terrains where militants are believed to be taking refuge.

According to officials, several forest belts in the Jammu region-particularly in Rajouri, Poonch, and Udhampur-have become the focus of recent search efforts. The dense vegetation and challenging terrain make these areas ideal hideouts for small militant groups attempting to evade detection.

Sources said that following suspicious movements detected by surveillance units, security forces initiated a cordon-and-search operation in select pockets. The encounter-like situation developed when militants reportedly opened fire on the approaching troops. In response, forces intensified their combing operations to prevent the militants from escaping deeper into the forest.

Senior police officials confirmed that drones, sniffer dogs, and thermal imaging devices are being used to track possible hideouts. “These militants are constantly shifting locations using forest cover, making it difficult to maintain contact. Our teams are focused on neutralizing any threat while ensuring the safety of nearby civilian areas,” an officer said.

Villages near the forest periphery have been placed on alert, and residents have been advised to restrict movement during night hours. Local sources suggest that the trapped group may have infiltrated recently across the Line of Control (LoC) and moved towards higher altitude forest zones to regroup.

The recent escalation in militant activity in forested sectors has prompted enhanced surveillance measures in Jammu and Kashmir. Security analysts believe militants are attempting to re-establish base camps in the region after facing setbacks in the Kashmir Valley.

Meanwhile, the ongoing operations highlight a broader strategy by the Indian security establishment to deny militants any safe sanctuary across the Union Territory. As the search continues, security forces remain cautious, citing the complex terrain and the risk of ambushes.

Officials said the operation is expected to continue until the militants are neutralized or captured, with reinforcements placed on standby. Further details are awaited as the operation unfolds.
