Gorakhpur Haryana Nuclear Project Advances With Major ECCS Construction Milestone

The Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (GHAVP) has recorded another important step in its development with the commencement of concrete placement for the Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) pit at Nuclear Building-01.

The work represents progress in the construction of the first two units of the Haryana-based nuclear power project. GHAVP Units 1 and 2 are designed with a capacity of 700 MWe each, giving the two units a combined planned generation capacity of 1,400 MWe.

The latest activity comes after extensive groundwork at the project site. Preparatory efforts included foundation works, testing and qualification of foundation piles, resolution of geotechnical requirements and completion of regulatory processes associated with the advancement of nuclear construction.

The ECCS pit is being constructed using substantial quantities of reinforcement steel and specially formulated concrete. The current operation involves approximately 280 tonnes of reinforcement steel along with nearly 450 cubic metres of nuclear-grade concrete.

Because the structure forms part of the safety-related infrastructure of the nuclear facility, its construction requires strict adherence to prescribed engineering, quality assurance and safety standards. The ECCS itself is intended to support reactor cooling under specified emergency conditions, making the associated infrastructure an important component of the plant’s overall safety framework.

The GHAVP project is being developed by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and represents a significant addition to India’s planned nuclear generation infrastructure. The Gorakhpur site in Haryana has been identified for the development of multiple nuclear power units.

The progress at Nuclear Building-01 indicates that the project is moving beyond several foundational and preparatory stages into more advanced civil construction activities. Such milestones are important in the development of nuclear facilities, where construction sequences are closely linked to engineering specifications, quality controls and regulatory requirements.

Once completed, GHAVP Units 1 and 2 will add 1,400 MWe of planned nuclear generation capacity to India’s energy infrastructure. The project forms part of the country’s wider effort to expand nuclear power and develop dependable electricity sources with lower carbon emissions.

The ongoing ECCS pit construction therefore marks a significant stage in the gradual development of the Gorakhpur Haryana nuclear project and its associated safety systems.
