Indian Army Accelerates Tech Modernisation With 6G, Quantum, AI Cloud and 300 Projects

The Indian Army is accelerating its technology modernisation programme with a strong focus on 6G communications, quantum technology, artificial intelligence and advanced cloud capabilities. The initiative is part of the Army’s decision to observe 2026 as the “Year of Networking and Data Centricity”, reflecting the growing importance of secure communications and data-driven military operations.

The Army is working on several advanced technology initiatives linked to 6G and the National Quantum Mission. A high-performance computing-based AI cloud is also being developed to support the three armed services and enable faster processing of operational data.

The modernisation drive involves collaboration with academic and research institutions, including IIT Madras, while the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering is supporting work in areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductor technology and quantum key distribution.

The Army has also identified specialised technology clusters to help convert emerging technologies into practical military capabilities. These efforts are aimed at strengthening battlefield networking, intelligence, surveillance, electronic warfare and autonomous operations.

More than 300 capability-development projects are planned over the coming decade. The programme highlights India’s increasing focus on indigenous defence technology and the development of a connected, data-centric military capable of operating effectively across multiple domains of warfare.
