Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made an unannounced visit to Abu Dhabi and met United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with the UAE later confirming the high-level talks between the two leaders.
The meeting was held on Sunday and was confirmed by the UAE after reports emerged about Netanyahu’s visit. According to the UAE’s official account, the discussions centred on relations between the UAE and Israel and efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
Netanyahu’s office said the Israeli prime minister travelled to Abu Dhabi at the invitation of Sheikh Mohamed. His office said the discussions covered bilateral relations and regional challenges. Israeli officials cited in reports said the talks also addressed Iran and wider security concerns in the region.
The timing of the meeting has drawn additional attention because of renewed reports concerning an alleged warning that Sheikh Mohamed is said to have given Netanyahu before the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
According to reports in the Israeli media, the UAE president allegedly raised concerns about preparations for a major Hamas operation before the attack. The claim has become part of a wider debate over the intelligence and security information available to Israeli authorities in the period leading up to October 7.
Netanyahu has rejected the allegation that he received such a warning. His office has also disputed reports suggesting that the Israeli prime minister was informed in advance about the scale or nature of Hamas preparations.
The UAE has previously avoided commenting directly on the reported conversation. Its Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it does not comment on media reports or speculation concerning private discussions between government leaders. The ministry also stated that UAE and Israeli government bodies have maintained direct communication channels since the establishment of diplomatic relations.
The latest Netanyahu-Sheikh Mohamed meeting comes as the Middle East continues to face significant security and diplomatic challenges. Although the UAE’s official statement highlighted bilateral relations, reports indicate that regional security issues were also discussed during the talks.
The relationship between Israel and the UAE dates back to the Abraham Accords, which led to the establishment of formal diplomatic ties in 2020. Since then, both countries have developed economic, diplomatic and security cooperation, despite differences over several regional issues.
Netanyahu’s latest visit was notable because it was not publicly announced before his arrival in Abu Dhabi. The UAE’s subsequent confirmation provided official acknowledgment of the meeting but did not disclose extensive details about the discussions.
The alleged October 7 warning remains a disputed issue. While media reports have raised questions about what information may have been communicated before the attack, Netanyahu has denied receiving such a warning, and the UAE has maintained its position of not commenting on private conversations between leaders.
