Indian Army Observes 79th Infantry Day, Saluting Courage and Legacy of the Foot Soldiers
Nation pays tribute to the Infantry-the backbone of the Indian Army-on the 79th Infantry Day with solemn ceremonies across the country.

The Indian Army celebrated the 79th Infantry Day with pride and reverence across the country, honouring the unmatched bravery, sacrifice, and dedication of its Infantry soldiers-the true frontline warriors of India’s defence forces.
The day marks a historic milestone from October 27, 1947, when Indian troops were airlifted to Srinagar to repel invading forces during the first Indo-Pak conflict. This decisive action safeguarded Jammu and Kashmir’s territorial integrity and became a cornerstone moment in India’s military history.
To commemorate the occasion, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, led by Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi. Senior officers, veterans, and families of martyrs gathered to pay homage to the countless soldiers who have laid down their lives in service of the nation.
Three decorated veterans-Major Ashish Sonal (VrC), Subedar Major & Honorary Captain Kunwar Singh (VrC), and Lance Naik Amrit (VrC)-joined the event, representing the indomitable spirit and gallantry that defines the Infantry’s ethos. Their participation underscored the continuing bond between past and present generations of Indian soldiers.
Across India, commemorative events such as memorial runs, seminars, veteran interactions, and felicitation ceremonies for Veer Naris (war widows) were organized to celebrate the Infantry’s contributions. The Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa Memorial Seminar in Lucknow also highlighted the Infantry’s evolving role in modern warfare and its unwavering commitment to national security.
The Army also released a special Infantry Magazine showcasing stories of courage, modernization efforts, and achievements of the Infantry regiments.
As India’s largest combat arm, the Infantry continues to embody the ideals of “Duty, Honour, and Courage,” defending the nation’s borders under the harshest conditions. Infantry Day stands as a solemn reminder of their unwavering resolve and the price of freedom they help safeguard.
