India’s Shield: DRDO Unveils Lightest Bulletproof Jacket For Maximum Protection

India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has made the lightest bulletproof jacket that can protect against the highest level of danger, BIS 6. A unit of the DRDO called the Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment (DMSRDE), Kanpur, made the jacket to protect against 7.62 x 54 R API (Level 6 of BIS 17051) ammo. It’s possible for six shots to miss the jacket.

“DMSRDE, Kanpur has successfully created an indigenous light-weight Bullet Proof Jacket (BPJ) to protect against the highest level of threat, BIS level 6. This is the first thing of its kind made of one piece of ceramic, and it can stop six 7.62×54 API bullets. “@DefenseMinIndia @SpokespersonMoD,” DRDO wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The Ministry of Defense says that the bulletproof jacket passed its tests at the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) in Chandigarh, in line with BIS 17051-2018. The jacket uses a new design technique and was made with new materials and methods.

The head of DRDO and the chief of the Department of Defense’s Research and Development Agency praised DMSRDE for making this bulletproof jacket.

In both ICW (In-Conjunction with) and Standalone designs, the front Hard Armour Panel (HAP) of the jacket can stop six shots of 7.62 x 54 R API (Sniper rounds).

A brief history of bullet proof jackets

Bullet proof coats are meant to keep the wearer’s chest safe from bullets. During World War II, bulletproof jackets were first widely made. They were made of overlapping plates of steel, aluminum, or bonded fiberglass that were sewn into a nylon clothing to protect the person wearing it.

These days, bulletproof coats are often made of kevlar, steel, polyethylene (PE), or ceramic, among other things.
