BRO’s Ambitious Move: Fencing A Major Portion Of India-Myanmar Border

Story Highlights
  • Building a fence along the border between India and Myanmar is a big job for the BRO, and it's about to start in Moreh.
  • Singh explained that the BRO has a long-term plan to spend about 30,000 crore in the northeast over the next five years.

A 10-km stretch in Manipur has already been fenced off by the Border Roads Organization (BRO), which is in charge of building roads and fences along the important border between India and Myanmar.

BRO’s Additional Director General (East) PKH Singh said that the Ministry of Home Affairs has found about 1,700 km of fence that needs to be put up.

They have already finished closing off 10 km of the border in Moreh, Manipur, and given it to the Assam Rifles.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently said that the Center has decided that the border between India and Myanmar will be protected by barbed wire, just like the border between India and Bangladesh. He also said that the government was rethinking the deal to allow people to freely move between India and Myanmar.

Four Indian states surround Myanmar. These are Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram. The border is 1,643 km long.

Singh said that the government has also been given the detailed project report (DPR) for the next 80 km stretch in Manipur.

The DPR is being made while plans are made to fence off the last 250 km and its approach roads.

Building a fence along the border between India and Myanmar is a big job for the BRO, and it’s about to start in Moreh. The area around this border hasn’t had a fence in a long time, so the ADG said, “We needed to check what was going on there.”

Singh explained that the BRO has a long-term plan to spend about 30,000 crore in the northeast over the next five years. Almost two-thirds of this is going to Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.

Earlier, the group worked with the BSF to build a fence along the border between India and Bangladesh, he said.
