Story Highlights
  • India has told China that things can't be normal between the two countries until there is peace on the border.
  • India was ready for this because the US gave them everything they needed. It's a good example of how well the two militaries are working together and sharing information

The White House has refused to confirm a news report that said the US gave the Indian military important real-time intelligence that helped it fight off Chinese “incursions” in the Himalayas last year. When reporters at a daily news conference at the White House asked John Kirby about the news report, he said, “No, I can’t confirm that.” Kirby is the National Security Council’s coordinator for strategic communications.

In an exclusive report, the US News said that India was able to stop a Chinese military incursion in border territory in the high Himalayas at the end of last year because it shared intelligence with the US military in a way that had never been done before. This caught China’s People’s Liberation Army off guard, angered Beijing, and may have made the Chinese Communist Party think twice about how it handles land grabs along its borders.

On December 9, Indian and Chinese troops fought along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh. The fight left “a few personnel from both sides with minor injuries.”

“The US government for the first time gave its Indian counterparts real-time information about the Chinese positions and force strength before a PLA incursion,” the report said, citing a source who knew about a US intelligence review of the encounter in the Arunachal Pradesh region that had not been made public before.

“The information was more detailed and sent more quickly than anything the US had ever given to the Indian military before,” it said..

The report said that the next fight, which involved hundreds of troops with spiked clubs and Tasers, didn’t result in any deaths like previous ones had. Instead, it caused a dozen or so injuries and, most notably, a Chinese retreat.

“They were holding out. India was ready for this because the US gave them everything they needed. It’s a good example of how well the two militaries are working together and sharing information “The daily reported what an unnamed source said.

After the big fight in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, which was the most serious military conflict between the two countries in decades, relations between India and China got a lot worse.

India has told China that things can’t be normal between the two countries until there is peace on the border.
