NATO Chiefs Of Defence Elect Major General Remigijus Baltrenas To Be Next Director General Of The NATO International Military Staff

During the recently concluded NATO Military Committee Conference in Prague, Major General Remigijus Baltrenas was elected by the Allied Chiefs of Defence to serve as the next Director of the NATO International Military Staff (DGIMS). This three-year appointment is made by the NATO Chiefs of Defence (CHOD) to lead the Alliance’s International Military Staff. Major General Remigijus Baltrenas will assume this role in July 2025, succeeding Lieutenant General Janusz Adamczak.
For more than 30 years, Major General Remigijus Baltrenas has served in the Lithuanian Armed Forces, utilizing his extensive knowledge and expertise in the intelligence field. He currently holds the positions of Chief of the Defence Staff and Vice Chief of Defence. With numerous deployments and postings under his belt, he brings valuable NATO experience to his role. From 2020 to 2023, he also served as the Lithuanian Military Representative to the NATO Military Committee.

The leader of the International Military Staff (IMS) is the Director General (DG), responsible for overseeing approximately 500 military and civilian personnel from NATO member countries at the headquarters in Brussels. The DG reports to the Military Committee, ensuring the IMS operates efficiently and effectively. The DG also has the authority to handle routine tasks on behalf of the Military Committee and can take executive action within established policies in urgent situations.
