Gen Syed Aamer Raza Takes Centre Stage in Pakistan’s New Strategic Command Setup

Pakistan has placed General Syed Aamer Raza in a newly created and highly significant military position, marking another major step in the country’s restructuring of its higher defence command system.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the promotion of Lieutenant General Aamer Raza to the rank of four-star general and his appointment as the first Commander of the National Strategic Command. Before the elevation, Gen. Raza was serving as the Chief of the General Staff of the Pakistan Army.

The new appointment has attracted attention because the Commander of the National Strategic Command is positioned at the centre of Pakistan’s strategic forces structure. The post was created as part of wider changes to the country’s military command architecture following the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

The restructuring abolished the position of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and introduced the position of Chief of Defence Forces, a role currently held by Field Marshal Asim Munir alongside his position as Chief of Army Staff. The new National Strategic Command is designed to provide a unified operational command structure for Pakistan’s strategic forces, while the National Command Authority continues to retain ultimate authority over nuclear policy and employment.

Gen. Aamer Raza brings extensive operational experience to the position. During his military career, he has held several senior assignments, including command of Lahore’s IV Corps and leadership of Heavy Industries Taxila. He also served as Chief of the General Staff, one of the Pakistan Army’s key operational appointments, before his promotion to four-star rank.

His elevation has also fuelled discussion about his growing influence within Pakistan’s military establishment. Some media reports have described him as emerging as one of the country’s most powerful military figures after Field Marshal Asim Munir. However, “second-most powerful” is a media assessment rather than an official designation.

After taking charge, Gen. Raza met Field Marshal Asim Munir at Pakistan Army’s General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. The military’s media wing said Munir congratulated him on assuming command.

The appointment is significant for regional security observers, particularly because the new command structure brings Pakistan’s strategic military capabilities under a more integrated operational framework. It also signals the implementation of major changes in Pakistan’s higher defence leadership following the constitutional reforms.

Gen. Aamer Raza’s new position is therefore expected to remain closely watched as Pakistan continues to reshape its military command system and define the responsibilities of its newly established strategic command.
