DRDO and IAF to Conduct PGB-500 Trials from Su-30MKI

India is advancing its efforts to strengthen indigenous air-launched weapon capabilities, with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) preparing to conduct trials of the PGB-500 precision-guided bomb from the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft.

The trials are planned for September and October 2026 and are expected to initially examine the weapon’s carriage and release characteristics. The testing will generate important technical data on the integration of the PGB-500 with the Su-30MKI and its behaviour during different stages of flight.

During the carriage phase, the bomb will be assessed while mounted on the fighter to evaluate factors including aerodynamic behaviour, aircraft handling and loads generated during flight. The subsequent release trials will focus on the weapon’s separation from the aircraft and its behaviour after release.

The PGB-500 forms part of India’s wider push to develop a stronger domestic inventory of precision-guided aerial weapons. A 500-kg class guided bomb could provide the IAF with an additional precision-strike option while contributing to the country’s objective of reducing dependence on imported munitions.

The planned trials also have significance for the Su-30MKI, which remains a major component of the Indian Air Force’s fighter fleet. The platform has been progressively integrated with several Indian-developed weapons, and testing another indigenous air-launched munition could further expand its operational flexibility.

The development reflects India’s continued focus on building domestic expertise in guided-weapons design, aircraft integration and flight testing. Indigenous precision-guided weapon programmes are aimed at improving the accuracy and effectiveness of air-launched munitions while strengthening the country’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.

The upcoming PGB-500 trials will represent an important stage in the weapon’s development. Data obtained from carriage and release evaluations can help DRDO and the IAF assess integration requirements, identify areas for refinement and determine the next steps in the testing programme.

For the Indian Air Force, the development of indigenous precision-guided bombs could enhance flexibility in future strike missions while supporting India’s broader drive towards self-reliance in defence production. The PGB-500 programme is therefore another step in strengthening the country’s indigenous air-launched precision-strike capabilities.
