Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi Inspects Guard of Honour in India
Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi has undertaken a series of official engagements in India, with his visit highlighting the expanding defence and security partnership between New Delhi and Tokyo.
In New Delhi, Koizumi inspected the ceremonial Guard of Honour at the Manekshaw Centre in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The formal military ceremony marked a key engagement during the Japanese Defence Minister’s visit and reflected the importance attached by both countries to their bilateral defence relationship.
Koizumi also visited the National War Memorial in the national capital, where he laid a wreath and paid tribute to Indian soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation.
His visit had earlier included engagements in Mumbai with the Indian Navy’s Western Naval Command. During the Mumbai leg, Koizumi inspected another Guard of Honour and paid homage at the Gaurav Stambh at the Naval Dockyard.
The Japanese Defence Minister also visited the Indian Navy’s indigenous stealth destroyer INS Chennai. During the visit, he was briefed on the warship’s capabilities and the operational responsibilities of the Indian Navy. He also held interactions with senior Indian naval leadership, providing an opportunity to discuss maritime security and regional developments.
The engagements come as India and Japan continue to expand cooperation across the defence and security spectrum. Maritime security remains an important area of collaboration, particularly given the two countries’ shared interest in maintaining stability and a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Defence technology and industrial cooperation are also emerging as important components of the bilateral relationship. Both countries have been exploring greater opportunities for collaboration in defence equipment, technology and manufacturing, supporting India’s broader push towards self-reliance in defence production.
The visit also follows a period of increased high-level engagement between India and Japan. Earlier bilateral discussions have placed emphasis on strengthening cooperation in defence, emerging technologies, economic security and other strategic areas.
Koizumi’s engagements in India therefore carry significance beyond the ceremonial events, providing another opportunity for the two countries to reinforce their strategic partnership and deepen practical cooperation in the defence and maritime domains.
With India and Japan playing increasingly important roles in the Indo-Pacific security architecture, continued exchanges between their defence establishments are expected to support closer coordination and greater defence cooperation in the years ahead.
