CDS Anil Chouhan’s Call For Agile Leadership In Navigating Complexity

  • "The leader will be at the most important battle, but he trusts his subordinates in all the other places," he said.
  • "The training that goes on at military academies leads to similar ideas and ideals," the CDS said.

Tuesday, General Anil Chouhan, who is the Chief of Defence Staff, said that the result of any battle depends on three big things: technology, tactics, and the way the army is organized.

General Anil Chouhan and the heads of the Army, Air Force, and Navy spoke to young students at an event to honor the National Defense Academy’s 75th anniversary.

“Leadership in the armed forces is usually cut off during battle or the buildup to it.” I think that the result of any kind of combat, from the smallest form of engagement to the biggest campaign or battle, depends on three big, real things. These are strategies, technologies, and ways of running businesses. As a battle-winning force, there is one intangible aspect of military leadership that is present in all types of combat. “What kind of leadership is needed depends on the type of battle,” General Anil Chouhan said.

Another thing he said was that the most basic level of military leadership is the “follow-me” style, which comes from the idea that every officer is born to lead.

It’s important to have both courage and faith in yourself. At the level of war where occupational art is most likely used, like at the unit or brigade level, there is a mix of direct and indirect leadership. “The leader will be at the most important battle, but he trusts his subordinates in all the other places,” he said.

The Chief of Defense Staff also said that leaders need to be able to think quickly.

“People who work for leaders need to trust them.” Being a leader in the military is hard. Even the best-laid plans fall apart after the first shot is fired. As a result, leaders need to be able to think quickly and creatively in order to handle difficult scenarios. “The training that goes on at military academies leads to similar ideas and ideals,” the CDS said.

“Cadets, I have to say that part of your job in the light brigade is to fight and not ask why.” “We need to be ready to fight with determination and no doubt,” he said.
