India’s First Tri-Services All-Women Sailing Team Sets Out on Historic World Voyage
Ten women officers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force begin a nine-month circumnavigation aboard IASV Triveni, showcasing Nari Shakti and self-reliance.

In a landmark moment for India’s defence forces, a team of ten women officers representing the Army, Navy, and Air Force has embarked on a first-of-its-kind circumnavigation mission. Sailing from the Gateway of India, Mumbai, on 11 September 2025, the officers will undertake a nine-month global voyage aboard the indigenously designed and built yacht, IASV Triveni.
The mission holds historical significance as it marks the first joint expedition by an all-women crew from the three services. Aptly named Triveni, symbolising the confluence of India’s military branches, the 50-foot sailing vessel is equipped with modern navigation, safety, and communication systems. The yacht itself is a proud reflection of Atmanirbhar Bharat, having been constructed in Puducherry.
The officers have undergone intensive training for over two years, mastering ocean sailing, scuba diving, navigation, and emergency medical care. They also completed a preparatory voyage to Seychelles and logged thousands of nautical miles in Indian waters before taking on this ambitious mission.
The crew will cover more than 26,000 nautical miles, crossing the Equator twice and navigating through some of the world’s most challenging waters, including the Southern Ocean and the Drake Passage. Along the way, they will pass the three great capes-Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn, and the Cape of Good Hope-an achievement attempted by only the most seasoned sailors.
This expedition is not just a test of endurance and seamanship but also a celebration of women empowerment in defence. By embarking on this journey, the officers are breaking barriers and setting an example of courage, resilience, and teamwork. The mission also reinforces India’s growing maritime capability and its commitment to supporting women in leadership roles across the armed forces.
As the IASV Triveni sails into uncharted waters, the voyage stands as a symbol of Nari Shakti, national pride, and the unyielding spirit of adventure.
