Indian Navy Set to Acquire Advanced Lightweight Torpedoes from DRDO

DAC clears path for cutting-edge torpedoes to strengthen India’s underwater defence

In a major stride towards modernizing India’s naval forces, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved the procurement of Advanced Lightweight Torpedoes (ALWT) developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This move is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s capabilities in anti-submarine warfare.

The ALWT is engineered for precision targeting in complex maritime conditions and is equipped with advanced guidance systems, superior speed, and extended operational range. These torpedoes will play a key role in countering underwater threats and strengthening India’s maritime security footprint.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh welcomed the DAC’s approval, emphasizing that this acquisition aligns with India’s goal of achieving greater self-reliance in defence technology. By relying on indigenously developed systems, India continues to reduce dependence on imports while boosting domestic innovation in defence manufacturing.

The addition of ALWT to the Indian Navy’s arsenal represents a significant leap in operational readiness and strategic deterrence, marking another milestone in India’s ongoing efforts to modernize its naval capabilities with homegrown technology.
