Indian Army Launches Specialised Drone Training Programme Under Southern Command
The new initiative aims to prepare soldiers for modern warfare through hands-on training in drone operations, surveillance, and precision missions.

The Indian Army has launched a specialised drone training initiative under its Southern Command, marking a significant step towards integrating unmanned systems into mainstream military operations. The training is being conducted in Rajasthan’s desert sector and focuses on improving soldiers’ skills in drone operations, surveillance, and precision targeting.
The programme aims to equip troops with practical knowledge of drone assembly, navigation, and maintenance, preparing them to handle modern warfare challenges. Conducted by the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) in collaboration with domestic defence startups, the course includes modules on First-Person View (FPV) piloting, real-time reconnaissance, and payload delivery techniques.
During recent field exercises near Jaisalmer, soldiers tested drones in various tactical roles, including aerial monitoring, target tracking, and mock-attack scenarios. The training highlighted how drones can enhance situational awareness and provide real-time intelligence in combat zones, particularly along India’s western borders.
Officials said the initiative is aligned with the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision to boost indigenous defence innovation. The Army is establishing dedicated “Drone Hubs” to design, test, and deploy unmanned systems tailored to Indian terrain and operational needs.
Experts believe this move reflects the Army’s strategic focus on technology-driven combat readiness, reducing reliance on foreign equipment while enhancing battlefield precision. As the programme expands across commands, drone operations are expected to become a core element of the Army’s future warfare strategy.
By blending human expertise with indigenous technology, the Indian Army is taking a decisive step toward building a self-reliant and future-ready force capable of meeting modern security challenges head-on.
