India has successfully carried out the test launch of an advanced Agni ballistic missile featuring Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, marking a major achievement in the country’s strategic defence programme. The launch took place from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast and was monitored closely by defence and scientific teams.
The missile reportedly completed all mission objectives during the trial, including the deployment of multiple payloads aimed at separate designated targets. Officials involved in the mission confirmed that tracking systems and sensors accurately monitored the missile’s performance throughout its flight path, validating the reliability of the advanced guidance and re-entry systems.
MIRV capability allows a single missile to carry several warheads that can independently strike different targets. This technology significantly improves strategic flexibility and strengthens deterrence capability by increasing the effectiveness of long-range missile systems. Defence analysts believe the successful demonstration places India among a select group of nations with operational MIRV-enabled missile technology.
The test was conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in coordination with the Strategic Forces Command. Scientists and defence personnel involved in the project were praised for the successful execution of the mission, which reflects the growing maturity of India’s indigenous missile development ecosystem.
