India Mourns Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum’s Passing as PM Modi and Jaishankar Offer Condolences

India has conveyed its condolences to the United Arab Emirates following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a senior member of Dubai’s ruling family and the younger brother of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over Sheikh Ahmed’s passing and extended his sympathies to the Al Maktoum family and the people of Dubai. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also offered condolences, conveying India’s support and sympathies to the bereaved family and the people of the emirate.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum passed away on September 21, 2026, at the age of 76. His death was followed by an official mourning period in Dubai. The announcement from the Dubai Royal Court said the mourning period would continue for 10 days, with government institutions observing the prescribed arrangements during this time.

Born into Dubai’s ruling Al Maktoum family, Sheikh Ahmed had a long association with the emirate’s public life. His responsibilities extended across security, military, business and sports-related institutions. He served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security and was also associated with Al Wasl Sports Club, one of the UAE’s prominent sporting organisations.

Sheikh Ahmed also had a military background. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom and subsequently served in Dubai’s military establishment. His career later included senior responsibilities connected with the emirate’s security and public institutions.

Beyond his official roles, Sheikh Ahmed was known for his involvement in horse racing and sporting activities. His association with Al Wasl further strengthened his presence in Dubai’s sporting community.

The messages from Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar underline India’s formal response to the passing of a prominent member of Dubai’s ruling family. India and the UAE maintain extensive ties covering diplomacy, trade, investment, energy, security and strong people-to-people connections.

With Dubai observing an official mourning period, tributes have continued to be expressed following Sheikh Ahmed’s death as the emirate remembers his decades of involvement in its public and institutional life.
