India Explores Rs 10,000 Crore Missile Procurement from Russia for S-400 Air Defence
Strengthening India’s Air Defence Arsenal Amid Rising Regional Tensions

India is reportedly in talks with Russia to procure a new batch of missiles worth around Rs 10,000 crore for its S-400 Triumf air defence system. Defence insiders say the acquisition is aimed at bolstering India’s air defence network, particularly after the system proved its effectiveness in recent operations.
The discussions include the potential purchase of advanced surface-to-air missiles capable of targeting hostile aircraft and drones over long ranges. The Defence Ministry may review the proposal in the upcoming Defence Acquisition Council meeting, signaling a strategic push to modernize India’s aerial defence infrastructure.
India first signed the S-400 deal with Russia in 2018, with three of the five planned squadrons already operational. The remaining deliveries faced delays due to global geopolitical shifts and logistical constraints. The current negotiations could also include options for new-generation air-to-air missiles and enhancements to existing systems like the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.
Officials emphasize that this step reflects India’s long-standing defence partnership with Russia and the country’s commitment to maintaining a robust air defence shield to counter evolving threats in the region.
