Defence Ministry Approves Rs 313 Crore Deal For Mid-Life Upgrade Of Frigate INS Beas

On Monday, the defense ministry signed a Rs 313 crore deal with the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) to “upgrade and re-power” the frontline ship INS Beas.

As per the ministry, the “transformative maiden re-powering” project is a big step forward in how the Indian Navy maintains ships and how CSL fixes them. It said, “On October 16, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Kochi-based M/S Cochin Shipyard Limited for the mid-life upgrade and re-powering of INS Beas.” The total cost of the work was Rs 313.42 crore.

The Brahmaputra class ship INS Beas is the first one to switch from steam to diesel power. “After the mid-life upgrade and re-powering is done in 2026, INS Beas will join the active fleet of the Indian Navy with a more modern set of weapons and better ability to fight,” the ministry said in a statement.

It said, “The fundamental first re-powering project is a big step forward in the Indian Navy’s maintenance philosophy and M/S CSL’s repair capabilities.” A government statement said, “The project would involve more than 50 MSMEs and would create jobs for more than 3,500 people.”

In line with the government’s “Make-in-India” program, it said the project would be a “proud flag bearer” of the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” goal.
