Gorkha Recruitment in Indian Army Depends on Nepal, Agnipath Remains Only Entry Route: Former CDS Anil Chauhan

The recruitment of Nepali Gorkhas into the Indian Army continues to remain uncertain, with former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan stating that the decision now depends on Nepal. He highlighted that the Agnipath scheme is the only available pathway for future Gorkha recruitment into the Indian Army.

The recruitment of Nepali citizens into the Indian Army’s Gorkha regiments has been paused since 2022 after Nepal raised concerns over the four-year service structure under the Agnipath scheme and its compatibility with the traditional arrangements governing Gorkha recruitment.

Speaking on the issue, General Chauhan said that India’s position is clear that all personnel below officer rank, including Gorkha recruits, must be inducted through the Agnipath system. The scheme was introduced in 2022 as a new recruitment model for soldiers, sailors, and airmen below commissioned officer rank.

The Gorkha community has a long and distinguished association with the Indian Army, with Gorkha soldiers playing a significant role in several military operations and contributing to India’s defence over decades. The recruitment of Nepali Gorkhas has historically been linked to the 1947 India-Nepal-UK Tripartite Agreement, which established the framework for Gorkha recruitment and service conditions.

However, Nepal’s concerns regarding the short-term nature of Agnipath service have created a diplomatic and recruitment deadlock. Since the suspension of recruitment activities, aspiring Gorkha youths in Nepal have been unable to join the Indian Army through traditional recruitment rallies.

The issue remains a matter of discussion between India and Nepal, as both sides consider the future of one of the most respected military traditions in South Asia. A resolution would determine the next phase of recruitment for Nepali Gorkhas seeking to serve in the Indian Army.
