DRDO Successfully Tests Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile
The Defence Research and Development Organisation has successfully conducted a flight test of its Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile, according to the Press Information Bureau. The test validates the weapon system’s operational readiness and indigenous development capabilities.
The Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile, commonly referred to as LRLACM, represents a significant milestone in India’s cruise missile portfolio. The system is designed to engage strategic targets at extended ranges, filling a critical gap in India’s land-attack precision strike inventory alongside existing platforms like the Brahmos and Nirbhay cruise missiles.
India’s cruise missile development programme has matured substantially over the past two decades. The LRLACM builds on technological foundations established through earlier DRDO projects, incorporating advanced guidance systems, terrain recognition capabilities, and modern avionics to achieve long-range accuracy. Unlike air-launched variants, this land-based variant provides the Indian Army with an organic, ground-based precision strike capability independent of aircraft availability.
The test demonstrates DRDO’s commitment to reducing India’s dependence on foreign weapon platforms through the Make in India defence initiative. Domestically developed cruise missiles enhance strategic autonomy, reduce long-term acquisition costs, and enable customisation to suit Indian operational requirements and threat perceptions in the Indian subcontinent and broader Indo-Pacific region.
Integration of land-attack cruise missiles into the Indian Army’s operational structure has progressed through multiple phases. Successful test cycles are prerequisites for transitioning developmental systems into service. Repeated successful tests typically precede formal induction into service and subsequent production contracts with the Defence Ministry.
