Military personnel account for nearly 50% of India’s CWG medal haul

Military personnel from India’s armed forces won 18 of the 39 medals claimed by the country at the Commonwealth Games, accounting for nearly half of the nation’s total medal tally, according to reports.

The strong showing underscores the role of defence services in competitive sport at the international level. Armed forces athletes compete across multiple disciplines including shooting, weightlifting, wrestling, and athletics at the Commonwealth Games.

India’s military has long maintained dedicated sports programmes to develop elite athletes. The Army, Navy, and Air Force each run sports academies and training centres that nurture talent from recruitment onwards. These programmes combine athletic development with military service, allowing personnel to represent India on the global stage.

Shooting has historically been a standout discipline for Indian military competitors at the Commonwealth Games. Army marksmen and women have consistently delivered medals in rifle and pistol events. The Service Rifle Championship and inter-service competitions provide platforms for identifying and honing shooting talent within the armed forces.

Weightlifting is another domain where military personnel have featured prominently in India’s Commonwealth Games contingent. The physical conditioning regimen and strength training infrastructure available within the services support development in this sport.

The contribution of military athletes reflects a broader defence recruitment strategy in which sports excellence serves as a pathway to officer and soldier entry. The Services Selection Board considers sporting achievements during candidate assessment, and serving personnel are given time and resources to pursue elite competition.

This performance also highlights India’s approach to grassroots sports development within institutional frameworks. Unlike reliance solely on civilian sports bodies, the armed forces maintain parallel training ecosystems that have produced consistent international medal winners.

The near-50 percent share of medals won by military personnel at the Commonwealth Games demonstrates the competitive capacity built into India’s defence establishment and the synergy between military service and athletic excellence on the Commonwealth sporting calendar.
