Indian Navy Opens Agniveer Apprentice 2026 Recruitment for 01/2027 and 02/2027 Batches
The Indian Navy has opened applications for the Agniveer Apprentice scheme for the 01/2027 and 02/2027 batches, according to recruitment notifications issued by the service. The move expands the Navy’s intake under the four-year Agniveer programme, which forms a core pillar of India’s military human resources modernisation strategy.
Agniveer recruits undergo accelerated training in technical and non-technical trades across all three services. Upon completion of their four-year tenure, successful candidates have the option to be retained on a permanent commission basis, creating a leaner, more agile personnel structure while building a trained reserve pool for national security.
The Agniveer Scheme was rolled out across the Indian Armed Forces starting in June 2022 as a significant departure from traditional recruitment models. Under this framework, personnel enter on fixed-term engagement contracts rather than permanent cadre positions, allowing the military to maintain operational flexibility while reducing long-term pension liabilities.
The Navy’s technical trades under Agniveer span critical domains including marine engineering, electronics, weapons systems operation, and information technology. These specialisations are essential as the Indian Navy expands its operational footprint across the Indian Ocean Region and beyond, with an increasing focus on network-centric warfare, unmanned systems integration, and advanced sensor platforms.
India’s current naval fleet includes destroyers like the Kolkata-class and Visakhapatnam-class fitted with advanced phased-array radar systems, submarine-launched cruise missiles, and integrated air defence networks. The Agniveer apprentices joining these vessels receive hands-on training on platforms that operate at the cutting edge of naval technology in the region.
The earlier Agniveer recruitment cycles across all three services attracted substantial participation from school and college-passed candidates. The scheme has been operationalised at recruitment rallies across states, with shortlisted candidates undergoing selection at military headquarters before reporting to training establishments.
The Agniveer model aligns with India’s broader defence modernisation roadmap, which emphasises technology-driven capabilities and human resource optimisation.
