Russia has signalled its support for India’s efforts to encourage a peaceful settlement to the Ukraine conflict, reinforcing New Delhi’s position that sustained dialogue remains essential to resolving the war. The Kremlin has indicated that Moscow views India’s diplomatic approach positively and is receptive to efforts that could contribute to bringing the conflict to an end.
India has maintained a distinct position throughout the Russia-Ukraine war, keeping communication channels open with both Moscow and Kyiv. Rather than directly aligning itself with either side, New Delhi has repeatedly called for negotiations, diplomacy and a practical approach to addressing the differences that have prolonged the conflict.
The latest Russian response is significant because India has continued to engage with major stakeholders while maintaining its strategic relationship with Moscow. New Delhi’s ability to communicate with Russia, Ukraine and Western countries has given it diplomatic space to advocate dialogue at a time when the conflict remains a major international security concern.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has indicated that Russia’s position on achieving a peaceful settlement is broadly compatible with India’s approach. Moscow’s acknowledgement of New Delhi’s efforts comes as international diplomatic activity surrounding the Ukraine conflict continues, with various countries exploring possible avenues for negotiations.
India has previously made clear that it is prepared to contribute to peace initiatives if its involvement can help create conditions for a settlement. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has also stressed that India remains engaged with both Russia and Ukraine, reflecting New Delhi’s continuing effort to maintain diplomatic communication with the two sides.
The issue is also expected to feature against the backdrop of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming engagement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The India-Russia relationship extends well beyond the Ukraine crisis, covering defence cooperation, energy, trade, technology and broader strategic interests. Discussions between the two leaders are therefore likely to address a wide range of bilateral and international issues.
For Moscow, India’s continued engagement with different sides of the conflict provides an important diplomatic channel. For New Delhi, the Russian endorsement further reinforces its long-standing position that complex international disputes cannot be resolved solely through military means and require sustained political engagement.
However, Russia’s support for India’s peace efforts should not be interpreted as an indication that a final settlement is imminent. The Ukraine conflict continues to involve significant military and geopolitical challenges, and any lasting agreement would require negotiations involving the principal parties and consideration of their respective security concerns.
The latest development nevertheless highlights India’s expanding role in international diplomacy. As the conflict continues, New Delhi’s ability to maintain relationships with competing global powers could allow it to remain a potential contributor to future diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and finding a path towards peace.
