Myanmar-Manipur Border Security Increased
- Recently, the Manipur government pulled out of the tripartite talks and suspension of operations agreement with three underground tribal militant outfits in the northeastern state.
- The government said that the Myanmar-based militant leaders were involved in illegal activities in the state.
In the last few days, there have been reports of fighting between the Myanmar Army and the People’s Defense Force along the Indian border.
In response, the Manipur government has sent in more security forces and asked the Assam Rifles to keep a close eye on the international border, an official said on Sunday.
“The security along the border between India and Myanmar in Manipur was tightened to prevent bad things from happening.” A senior police officer said, “So far, there have been no reports of Myanmar citizens crossing into Manipur because of the fighting there.”
Security and district administration officials say that the international border is now being patrolled by foot around the clock. Also, more troops, including the Manipur Rifles, police, and other security staff, have been sent in.
Since the military junta took power in the neighboring country in February 2021, the Myanmar Tatmadaw (military) has often fought armed battles with civilian forces.
About 400 km of Manipur’s border with Myanmar is not fenced. This is the main way that drugs, gold, exotic animals, poppy seeds, and other illegal items get into the country.
