India Plans to Operationalise Five Indigenous Small Nuclear Reactors by 2033

India is moving ahead with an ambitious plan to expand its nuclear energy capabilities by targeting the operationalisation of five indigenous Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) by 2033. The announcement reflects the government’s broader strategy to diversify the country’s energy mix, reduce carbon emissions, and ensure reliable power generation for the coming decades.

The roadmap was shared by Minister of State in the Department of Atomic Energy, Dr. Jitendra Singh, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. He said the development of indigenous SMRs is a major component of the Nuclear Energy Mission, which aims to increase India’s installed nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047.

Unlike conventional nuclear plants, Small Modular Reactors are designed to be more compact, require less land, and can be built in a phased manner. Their modular design enables faster construction while offering greater flexibility for deployment near industrial zones, remote regions, and areas with growing electricity demand.

India’s nuclear research institutions are currently working on multiple indigenous reactor designs, including the 220 MW Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR) and other advanced reactor technologies that can support electricity generation as well as future applications such as hydrogen production and industrial heat.

To support this expansion, the government has also introduced policy reforms aimed at encouraging greater private sector participation in the nuclear industry. The new framework is expected to promote domestic manufacturing, technology development, and investment while strengthening India’s self-reliance in strategic energy infrastructure.

India currently operates multiple nuclear power plants across the country, while several new reactors are under construction to expand the nation’s clean energy capacity. These ongoing projects, along with the planned deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), are expected to play a vital role in strengthening India’s long-term nuclear power programme and supporting its future energy requirements.

The government’s focus on indigenous reactor technology is expected to reduce dependence on imported energy resources, improve energy security, and support India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions. By combining advanced reactor technology with domestic manufacturing capabilities, India aims to establish a sustainable and resilient nuclear energy ecosystem that can meet future power requirements.

The planned deployment of five indigenous Small Modular Reactors by 2033 marks another significant milestone in India’s clean energy journey and reinforces the country’s commitment to developing advanced, home-grown nuclear technologies for long-term economic and strategic growth.
