Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Indian Navy & German TKMS Enter Talks on P75I Submarine Project
Negotiations mark a major step towards building six next-generation submarines under India’s ambitious P75I program

India’s ambitious submarine modernisation effort has gained fresh momentum as Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) initiated formal negotiations with the Indian Navy and Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) for the Project 75 (India), or P75I.
The project, estimated to be worth billions, seeks to build six advanced conventional submarines equipped with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, which will enable longer underwater endurance and stealth operations. Once finalized, the deal is expected to be one of the largest defence contracts under India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Industry insiders reveal that the current discussions focus on finalizing the technical framework, financial structure, and timelines for construction. TKMS, globally known for its submarine expertise, is positioned as a key partner in providing technology transfer, while MDL will serve as the lead Indian manufacturer.
Defence experts believe that the P75I submarines will play a pivotal role in countering regional security challenges, particularly in the Indo-Pacific, where maritime competition is intensifying. The addition of these vessels will not only expand India’s naval reach but also enhance its strategic deterrence capabilities.
With the Indian Navy already operating Scorpene-class submarines under Project-75, the P75I program is seen as the next leap in underwater warfare technology, aligning with India’s long-term maritime security objectives.
As negotiations progress, officials remain optimistic that the agreement could be concluded in the coming months, setting the stage for construction to begin at Mazagon Dock in Mumbai.
