Lieutenant Shanan Dhaka: First Woman NDA Topper Commissioned as Indian Army Officer
Lieutenant Shanan Dhaka has been commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army following her graduation from the National Defence Academy, marking a historic milestone as the first woman to top the NDA entrance examination.
Her commissioning represents a significant moment in the Indian Army’s ongoing integration of women officers across combat and support roles. Women have been eligible for permanent commission in the Indian Armed Forces since 2020, following a Supreme Court order that opened officer ranks to women on equal terms with male counterparts.
The NDA, located in Khadakwasla near Pune, remains India’s premier tri-service military academy. It trains cadets for the Army, Navy, and Air Force through a rigorous three-year curriculum that emphasises leadership, tactical acumen, and military discipline. Cadets who rank at the top of their batch have historically gone on to command formations and influence defence policy at the highest levels.
Shanan’s achievement comes as the Indian Armed Forces accelerate efforts to meet recruitment targets and leverage talent from the broader population. The Army has progressively expanded opportunities for women officers, with female cadets now competing across all courses at the NDA without gender-based restrictions on subject choice or stream selection.
Her commissioning also reflects demographic shifts within India’s officer corps. The Services have recruited women as fighter pilots, combat engineers, and artillery officers in recent years. These postings, once reserved exclusively for men, now include women officers on permanent commission with full career progression to senior ranks.
The Indian Army currently deploys women officers in branches including infantry support, signals, engineering, and medical services, with further expansion planned in direct combat roles. Lieutenant Shanan’s top-rank achievement reinforces that merit and competence, rather than gender, determine selection and progression through the defence services.
Her passing out from the NDA adds to a growing cohort of women officers who entered the Academy in recent batches. These officers will serve during a period of significant modernisation across the Indian Armed Forces, including integration of new platforms, ammunition systems, and doctrine rooted in network-centric warfare and rapid response capabilities.
