ISRO Executes 29 Collision Avoidance Manoeuvres to Safeguard Indian Satellites in Orbit

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has carried out 29 Collision Avoidance Manoeuvres (CAMs) to protect its operational satellites from potential collision risks in space. The latest development highlights India’s advanced space monitoring capabilities and its commitment to ensuring the safety of critical space assets.

With the rapid expansion of satellite deployments worldwide, Earth’s orbit has become increasingly crowded with active spacecraft, inactive satellites, and space debris. Even a minor collision in orbit can damage expensive satellites, disrupt essential services, and generate additional debris that may threaten other missions.

ISRO continuously monitors the orbital environment around its satellites through advanced Space Situational Awareness (SSA) systems. These systems track nearby objects, analyse possible close approaches, and provide necessary alerts to mission teams. When a significant risk is identified, controlled orbital adjustments are performed to move satellites away from possible collision paths.

The execution of these 29 manoeuvres reflects the growing importance of orbital safety for India’s expanding space programme. Indian satellites provide vital services including communication, navigation, earth observation, weather monitoring, disaster management, and strategic applications. Protecting these assets is essential for maintaining uninterrupted space-based capabilities.

ISRO’s collision avoidance operations are supported by its dedicated space safety infrastructure, including the ISRO System for Safe and Sustainable Space Operations Management (IS4OM), which focuses on monitoring space objects, assessing collision risks, and improving the long-term sustainability of space activities.

India is also enhancing its indigenous tracking capabilities through initiatives such as Project NETRA (Network for Space Object Tracking and Analysis). The programme aims to strengthen India’s ability to detect, track, and analyse space debris and other objects that could pose threats to satellites.

The increasing number of satellites launched by different countries and private companies has made space traffic management a major global challenge. Space agencies are now focusing on better coordination, accurate orbital predictions, and timely corrective actions to prevent accidents in space.

ISRO’s successful completion of multiple collision avoidance manoeuvres demonstrates India’s preparedness to tackle emerging challenges in the space domain. These efforts not only protect existing satellite infrastructure but also support future missions as India continues to expand its presence in space.
