Indian Navy To Commission INS Jatayu Base In Minicoy Islands Next Week

Story Highlights
  • The ability to fight submarines and the helicopter's ability to stay in the air will change how we do spying and give us a bigger surveillance bubble.
  • According to defense officials, the Indian Navy will also hold its commanders' conference on the twin aircraft carriers INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant.

The Indian Navy is about to open a new base called INS Jatayu in the Minicoy Islands of Lakshadweep. This will help the navy’s situation in the Indian Ocean.

An official said, “This would also give us a strong foothold in the area to keep an eye on the military and commercial activities of our enemies in the area, since this is only about 50 miles from the islands of the Maldives.”

The Navy will also officially add the MH 60R helicopter to its fleet next week, which will improve its Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) powers.

On March 6, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will give the MH 60R Seahawk multi-role chopper its first flight at the INS Garuda here.

“This MH-60R brings us a lot closer to being able to fight submarines.” The ability to fight submarines and the helicopter’s ability to stay in the air will change how we do spying and give us a bigger surveillance bubble.

According to defense officials, the Indian Navy will also hold its commanders’ conference on the twin aircraft carriers INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant. During the conference, the carriers will be doing fast-paced tasks like taking off and landing from one carrier to the other. Other warships and submarines will also be part of the carrier battle groups.
