Indian Army Inducts 5,000 More AK-203 Rifles from Amethi Facility
Fresh supply of advanced assault rifles strengthens infantry and supports India’s self-reliance in defence production.

The Indian Army has received another batch of 5,000 AK-203 assault rifles from the Korwa Ordnance Factory in Amethi, marking a significant boost to its infantry modernisation programme. The rifles are being produced under Indo-Russia Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), a joint venture between India and Russia aimed at manufacturing over six lakh rifles domestically.
The AK-203, chambered in 7.62×39 mm, is the latest evolution of the world-renowned Kalashnikov series. Known for its rugged design, reliability in extreme environments, and improved ergonomics, the rifle is set to gradually replace the Army’s ageing INSAS rifles. Defence officials note that its induction will enhance combat readiness across different operational theatres, including counter-insurgency operations and high-altitude deployments.
The Amethi production unit has been steadily ramping up its output, aligning with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing. Earlier consignments of AK-203 rifles have already been deployed, and this latest delivery further consolidates the Army’s small arms capability.
Experts highlight that this development not only equips soldiers with a modern and battle-tested weapon but also showcases India’s progress in localising defence technology through international collaboration. With consistent production, the Army is expected to transition its frontline troops to AK-203 rifles in the coming years, reinforcing both operational effectiveness and strategic self-reliance.
