India to Finalize Two Landmark Submarine Deals Worth ₹1 Lakh Crore by 2026

Scorpene-class expansion with France and stealth submarine project with Germany set to transform India’s naval power under Make in India.

India is moving closer to signing two long-awaited submarine contracts that together carry a value of more than ₹1 lakh crore. Both projects are expected to be finalized by mid-2026, marking a decisive step in strengthening the Navy’s undersea warfare capability.

The first agreement focuses on the purchase of three additional Scorpene-class submarines. Built in partnership with France’s Naval Group at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL), this deal-estimated at around ₹36,000 crore-will add to the six Scorpenes already in service. The Scorpene line has proven effective for coastal defence and deterrence operations, making this expansion a priority for the Ministry of Defence.

The second, larger initiative falls under Project-75 India (P75-I) and involves the construction of six advanced diesel-electric submarines featuring Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems. Valued at nearly ₹65,000 crore, the programme will be carried out jointly by Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and MDL. The AIP technology will significantly extend underwater endurance, a capability critical in modern naval warfare.

Negotiations are expected to accelerate in the coming months, with cost and contractual details likely to be settled within 9–12 months. Once finalized, deliveries could begin approximately six years later, ensuring a steady enhancement of India’s naval strength through the next decade.

These parallel deals highlight India’s dual focus on strategic partnerships with global leaders and domestic manufacturing under Make in India. Together, they aim to reinforce the Navy’s ability to counter emerging challenges in the Indo-Pacific, where maritime security has become increasingly contested.
