India Develops Containerised Theatre Sonar System for Networked Anti-Submarine Warfare
India has developed a containerised theatre-level sonar system aimed at strengthening the Indian Navy’s networked anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities. The new system is designed to improve underwater surveillance by integrating multiple naval assets into a unified operational network, enhancing maritime domain awareness across wide operational areas.
Built with a modular containerised architecture, the system can be deployed quickly on different platforms, including warships, coastal facilities, and other maritime installations. Its flexible design enables faster operational deployment while simplifying integration with both existing and future naval assets.
The theatre-level sonar network combines acoustic data collected from multiple sensors to generate a common underwater operational picture. This shared information allows naval units to detect, classify, and monitor submarine activity more effectively while improving coordination between ships and shore-based command centres during ASW operations.
As underwater security challenges continue to evolve in the Indian Ocean Region, the new capability is expected to enhance the Navy’s ability to monitor vast maritime areas. By linking sensors across multiple platforms, the system increases detection coverage and supports faster decision-making during submarine tracking missions.
The technology has been developed to support India’s growing focus on indigenous defence capabilities. It incorporates domestic expertise in underwater acoustics, signal processing, and naval combat system integration, reducing dependence on foreign technologies for critical maritime surveillance systems.
The containerised approach also allows the sonar system to be installed on existing vessels with minimal structural changes, making fleet-wide upgrades more practical and cost-effective. This flexibility ensures that both legacy and newly commissioned platforms can contribute to a common anti-submarine warfare network.
With its scalable and interoperable design, the new sonar system represents another step in strengthening India’s maritime surveillance infrastructure while supporting long-term efforts to modernise naval operations through indigenous defence technologies.
