India and Germany Explore Solar and Battery Manufacturing Partnership to Strengthen Energy Independence

Germany is looking to deepen its renewable energy partnership with India by encouraging joint manufacturing initiatives in solar power and battery technologies. German Ambassador to India Jasper Wieck has highlighted the potential for German and Indian companies to work together in developing local production facilities, supporting India’s efforts to build a more self-reliant energy sector.

Addressing the 20th anniversary of the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF) in New Delhi, Wieck stressed that strengthening domestic manufacturing is essential for India’s long-term energy security. He indicated that cooperation should focus not only on expanding renewable energy generation but also on producing the equipment required to support it within India.

The proposal comes at a time when countries are increasingly examining the security of their energy supplies. International disruptions, including tensions affecting the Strait of Hormuz, have highlighted the economic risks associated with dependence on imported conventional fuels. Developing domestic solar and battery industries could help India improve its resilience against external supply disruptions.

Another important consideration is the concentration of global solar manufacturing. China dominates several stages of the solar panel supply chain, accounting for more than 80 per cent of global manufacturing capacity, according to the International Energy Agency. German-Indian industrial cooperation could create opportunities to diversify production and strengthen India’s position in this strategically important sector.

The Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 has offered an opportunity for companies from both countries to explore commercial partnerships and investment possibilities. Germany’s participation through a business delegation reflects its interest in expanding industrial engagement with India’s rapidly developing clean energy market.

Beyond solar and battery manufacturing, green hydrogen remains a significant priority for bilateral cooperation. India has considerable potential to produce green hydrogen using renewable electricity, while Germany could emerge as an important international market. The Indo-German Green Hydrogen Roadmap, launched in October 2024, provides a framework for cooperation in hydrogen production, infrastructure and industrial applications.

The Indo-German Energy Forum, established in 2006, has served as an important platform for cooperation in renewable energy, energy efficiency and emerging clean technologies. Its 20-year milestone provides an opportunity for both countries to broaden their partnership towards manufacturing, investment and technology development.

For India, stronger engagement with Germany could support domestic industrial growth, improve access to advanced technologies and reduce dependence on imported clean energy equipment. The proposed cooperation also complements the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision by promoting local production and building a more resilient renewable energy ecosystem.
