‘Inaccurate’: Govt Rejects Reports On Indians In Russian Army Seeking Discharge

Reports that Indian soldiers in the Russian army are trying to get out and need help did not go over well with the Ministry of External Affairs. The ministry called the story “inaccurate” and said that every case like this has been dealt with “strongly.” As a result, many Indians have already been released from their service.

In its notice, the MEA said, “We have seen some false reports in the media about Indians in the Russian army who are trying to get out.” As soon as this kind of case was brought to the attention of the Indian Embassy in Moscow, it was taken up with the Russian government. Similarly, cases brought to the attention of the Ministry were taken up with the Russian Embassy in New Delhi. Because of this, several Indians have already been let go.

The ministry also said it was committed to this “top priority matter” and had been trying to get the Russian government to do the same.

“We remain committed, as a matter of top priority, to actively pursuing with the Russian authorities all the relevant cases of Indian nationals for an early discharge from the Russian army,” the ministry said.

On February 24, 2024, it had been two years since Russia’s “full-scale invasion” in 2022.

Earlier on Friday, the MEA said it was in talks with Moscow to “discharge” early Indians who were working as support staff for the Russian Army. The MEA also told Indians to stay away from the war zone in Ukraine.

Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesman for the External Affairs Ministry, said these things after hearing that some Indians are working in the war zone as support staff for the Russian army.

“We are aware that a few Indian nationals have signed up for support jobs with the Russian army,” said Jaiswal.

He said that the Indian embassy in Moscow has been talking to the right Russian officials about this issue on a regular basis so that they can “early discharge” the person. “We urge all Indian nationals to exercise due caution and stay away from this conflict.”
