India’s Strategic Gesture: BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missiles Delivered To Philippines

Story Highlights
  • The range of their hits is up to 290 kilometers, and they can be fired from subs, ships, planes, or land.
  • This is because the world is becoming more worried about China's growing military power in the South China Sea, which is a major source of oil and gas.

On Friday, India sent the Philippines its first batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles. The deal to sell the weapons to the Southeast Asian country for $375 million was signed more than two years ago.

Defense sources told the news outlet that the Indian Air Force sent the brahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines on its C-17 Globemaster transport plane in order to deliver the weapon system.

It is important to remember that in January 2022, New Delhi made a deal with the Philippines to send the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. This was India’s first big order for defense exports.

Manila will get three missile batteries for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system as part of the deal. Along with the deal came training for the operators and the appropriate integrated logistics support package.

The Philippines Marine Corps told the New Indian Express that 21 members of the Philippine Navy were properly trained as operators for the missile system in February 2023.

The story says that the training was mostly about how to run and take care of some of the supersonic cruise missile system’s most important logistics packages.

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and the Russian Federation’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya work together to run BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd, which makes supersonic cruise missiles. People say that the BrahMos program for supersonic cruise missiles is one of the best in the world.

The BrahMos cruise missiles are very fast. They fly at 2.8 Mach, which is almost three times the speed of sound. The range of their hits is up to 290 kilometers, and they can be fired from subs, ships, planes, or land.

It is important to note that New Delhi has been thinking about ways to strengthen its defense ties with the Philippines. This is because the world is becoming more worried about China’s growing military power in the South China Sea, which is a major source of oil and gas.
