Greece Police And Israel’s Mossad Catch Two Pakistani Men For Planning A Terror Attack In Athens

  • Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that the arrest was "more proof of how good Israeli intelligence is and how important it is for countries to work together to fight terrorism and those who do it."
  • "The Mossad and Israel's intelligence agencies will continue to make sure that Iran will face a strong response wherever it tries to hurt our people," he said.

Late on Tuesday, Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, said that his country’s intelligence agency, Mossad, helped Greece stop a terrorist attack that was going to happen against at least one Jewish site in Athens.

It is said that the Israeli spy agency Mossad and the Greek police worked together to stop a plan to carry out a large-scale terror attack against Israelis and Jews in Greece.

The Times of Israel said that on Tuesday, the Greek police arrested two Pakistani citizens who were planning the attack.

In a statement, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said that the two Pakistani people who were caught were part of an Iranian terror network.

“The case that was found in Greece is a serious one that the Greek security forces were able to stop. “Iran tried again to use terrorism against Israeli and Jewish targets outside of Iran,” the Israeli PMO said.

“When the investigation of the suspects in Greece began, the Mossad helped with intelligence to figure out the infrastructure, how it worked, and how it was linked to Iran.

“The investigation showed that the infrastructure that was used in Greece was part of a large Iranian network that was run from Iran and spread across many countries,” the report said.

The two unnamed suspects are reportedly being held at the police headquarters in the center of Athens. They are 27 and 29 years old. A third man who is not in Greece is being looked for and has been charged even though he is not there.

Local news outlets said that the attack was aimed at a Chabad House, which has a Kosher restaurant and holds other religious services.

It is important to note that the Pakistani terrorists who attacked Mumbai on November 26 also went after the Chabad House in that city.

Greek police said that the suspects had picked a “highly symbolic” target and were making the final plans for the attack.

The Greek police said, “Their goal was not only to kill innocent people, but also to make people feel less safe in the country, hurt public institutions, and put Greece’s international relations at risk.”

People said that the two Pakistanis were part of a “large Iranian network that works from Iran and many other places.”

“An analysis of the information and digital data that was seized showed and confirmed that the members of the network had already chosen a building of special importance as the target of the attack, scouted the area and planned the attack, and received final orders to carry out the attack,” a police statement posted on the Greek news site Directus said.

According to the report, the government started looking into the terror network after two other Pakistani men suspected of planning attacks on Israelis were caught in 2021.

It also said that the network was linked to an Iranian plot that was stopped in Turkey last year.

Eli Cohen, who is Israel’s foreign minister, thanked Greece for stopping the plot.

“The Ayatollah regime in Tehran sends terror to the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and the rest of the world.” Cohen said in a tweet that the only way to stop the Iranian government from doing bad things is to be tough and work with them.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that the arrest was “more proof of how good Israeli intelligence is and how important it is for countries to work together to fight terrorism and those who do it.”

“The Mossad and Israel’s intelligence agencies will continue to make sure that Iran will face a strong response wherever it tries to hurt our people,” he said.
