India-Iran Relations Gain Fresh Push as Tehran Signals Greater Cooperation Ahead of BRICS

Iran has renewed its emphasis on closer relations with India as President Masoud Pezeshkian prepares to travel to New Delhi for the BRICS Summit. Tehran’s latest comments indicate that it sees India as an important partner for expanding economic ties and maintaining strategic engagement at a time of major geopolitical changes across West Asia.

The renewed diplomatic momentum follows a recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. The discussions covered bilateral relations as well as the wider security situation in West Asia, with both sides continuing to maintain dialogue despite the complex regional environment.

For Iran, India represents an important economic and diplomatic partner beyond its immediate neighbourhood. Tehran has repeatedly highlighted the longstanding nature of the relationship, while New Delhi has sought to maintain an independent foreign policy that allows it to engage with countries across different geopolitical groupings.

One of the most significant areas of cooperation between the two countries is connectivity. The development and operation of Chabahar Port remains central to India’s engagement with Iran. The Iranian port gives India an important maritime gateway towards Afghanistan and Central Asia, potentially supporting trade routes that bypass traditional land corridors.

Chabahar also has significance beyond commercial activity. Its location along the Gulf of Oman gives the project broader importance for regional connectivity and India’s efforts to strengthen economic links with Central Asian countries. Continued cooperation over the port is therefore expected to remain an important part of discussions between New Delhi and Tehran.

The BRICS Summit provides another diplomatic opportunity for the two countries to advance their engagement. With India hosting the summit, President Pezeshkian’s participation could create space for discussions on trade, investment, connectivity and broader cooperation among emerging economies.

India and Iran also share an interest in maintaining stability across the region. New Delhi has consistently called for dialogue and diplomacy to address conflicts in West Asia while emphasising the need to protect commercial routes and freedom of navigation. These concerns have become increasingly important as regional tensions continue to affect trade and transportation networks.

For India, maintaining working relations with Tehran can support its wider connectivity objectives and access to markets in Central Asia. For Iran, stronger economic engagement with India could help expand its links with one of the world’s major emerging economies.

The latest exchange between the two countries suggests that India-Iran relations could receive additional attention during the BRICS Summit.
