Transformers and Rectifiers Enters Nuclear Power Sector With Kaiga Units 5 and 6 Order

Transformers and Rectifiers (India) Limited (TARIL) has secured a major order connected to India’s nuclear power programme, marking the company’s first entry into the nuclear energy sector. The Ahmedabad-based manufacturer will supply Generator Transformers for Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited’s (NPCIL) Kaiga Units 5 and 6 project in Karnataka.

The order has been received through Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL), the EPC contractor associated with the project. The development gives TARIL an opportunity to expand its specialised transformer business into one of India’s most strategically important infrastructure segments.

Kaiga Units 5 and 6 are being developed as two indigenous 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors. With a combined capacity of 1,400 MW, the two units are part of India’s programme to increase domestic nuclear generation while building greater reliance on locally developed technology and manufacturing capabilities.

The generator transformers that TARIL will provide are an important component of the project’s electrical system. They will help transfer the electricity produced by the nuclear generating units toward the transmission network, making their reliable operation essential to the overall power evacuation arrangement.

For TARIL, the contract represents more than an additional order in its existing power-equipment portfolio. Entry into the nuclear segment places the company in a highly specialised market where equipment reliability, manufacturing standards and long-term performance are critical considerations.

The company said its expansion into the nuclear sector is aligned with India’s wider requirement for stronger domestic capabilities in critical energy infrastructure. TARIL has also indicated that it plans to contribute to the country’s growing nuclear and transmission requirements through its high-voltage transformer manufacturing expertise.

The Kaiga project is significant within India’s nuclear programme as the country continues to pursue additional nuclear generating capacity. The participation of an Indian transformer manufacturer in the project also reflects the growing role of domestic industrial companies in supplying specialised equipment for major strategic infrastructure programmes.

The latest order adds another important segment to TARIL’s growing business portfolio and could improve its positioning for future opportunities linked to nuclear generation and high-voltage power infrastructure. The company’s move comes as India places increasing emphasis on strengthening indigenous manufacturing across critical energy systems.
