HAL-Samtel Strengthen India’s Defence Avionics Push With New Gurugram Facility

India’s push to develop critical defence technologies within the country has received a fresh boost with the inauguration of a new manufacturing facility by Samtel HAL Display Systems Limited (SHDS) in Gurugram. The joint venture between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Samtel Avionics opened the facility at Udyog Vihar Phase IV, creating additional capacity for indigenous defence avionics development and production.

The new facility is designed around advanced display technologies used in military applications. Along with manufacturing, it will provide testing and quality-assurance capabilities and support activities ranging from product development to lifecycle support. The systems produced and supported at the facility will cater to both airborne and ground-based applications.

The inauguration is significant because SHDS has already established a track record in replacing imported avionics technology with Indian-designed systems. The company became the first public-private defence avionics joint venture in India to design, qualify and serially manufacture a multifunction display for a fighter aircraft. Its display systems are currently deployed on the Indian Air Force’s Su-30MKI fleet.

The HAL-Samtel partnership brings together HAL’s experience in military aircraft and Samtel’s expertise in display technology. According to HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi K., the new facility reflects the importance of working with Indian industry to accelerate the development of indigenous avionics and reduce reliance on foreign sources for critical equipment.

For SHDS, the expansion comes at a time when demand for domestically developed avionics is increasing across several Indian military aviation programmes. The company has been selected for HAL’s Advanced Light Helicopter programme and is positioned for the Light Combat Helicopter programme. It is also pursuing opportunities associated with the Light Utility Helicopter, Light Combat Aircraft and Indian Multi-Role Helicopter programmes.

The company’s existing programme base includes significant requirements for multifunction displays. HAL’s recent disclosures have identified SHDS as the original equipment manufacturer for multifunction display systems supplied for platforms including the Su-30MKI and Light Combat Helicopter programmes.

The expansion also underlines the commercial growth of the joint venture. SHDS is expecting annual turnover of approximately ₹200 crore in the current year and sees the possibility of reaching ₹400–500 crore over the next three to four years as additional aircraft programmes generate demand.

Established in 2006, SHDS was created to address the avionics requirements of HAL aircraft. Its capabilities cover display-system design, development, manufacturing, maintenance and obsolescence management. The company also operates as a CEMILAC-approved design house and a DGAQA-approved manufacturing facility.

The Gurugram facility consequently represents more than an expansion of manufacturing infrastructure. It strengthens an indigenous supply chain around one of the most important electronic elements inside modern military aircraft—the cockpit display. As India moves towards greater domestic production of fighters, helicopters and other defence platforms, locally developed avionics will become increasingly important for reducing import dependence and maintaining long-term support for these systems.

The HAL-Samtel initiative adds to the broader effort to build a stronger Indian defence industrial base in which private-sector technology expertise and public-sector aerospace experience can be combined to develop critical systems for the armed forces.
