Indian Armed Forces to Induct 16 Indigenous Laser Anti-Drone Systems

New directed-energy platforms to strengthen India’s frontline defence against rising drone intrusions.

India is set to make a major advancement in its counter-drone capabilities with the induction of 16 new indigenous laser anti-drone systems for the Armed Forces. Designed to counter growing unmanned aerial threats, the systems promise faster, more precise neutralisation of hostile drones – a capability increasingly crucial in modern conflict zones.

According to defence officials, the upcoming systems will feature a 2-kilometre destructive engagement range, while maintaining detection and tracking abilities up to 5 kilometres. The technology aims to strengthen perimeter security around sensitive military bases and improve the Armed Forces’ response to low-cost drone incursions, which are becoming common across global conflict theatres.

The laser-based solution is part of India’s broader push toward directed energy weapons (DEWs), offering a clean, silent and cost-effective way to destroy aerial targets. Unlike conventional ammunition-based or jamming-based countermeasures, laser systems rely on concentrated energy to disable drones, reducing collateral damage and improving reaction time.

The new platform is expected to integrate multiple sensor suites including high-resolution electro-optics, radar units and AI-assisted target tracking. These allow the system to identify, lock on to and neutralise both fixed-wing and rotary drones with high precision. Mounted on mobile platforms, the units can be quickly deployed across border regions and high-risk zones.

The move also signals India’s growing confidence in its indigenous defence ecosystem. DRDO and domestic defence manufacturers have been accelerating the development of DEW technologies, recognising their long-term strategic value in layered air defence.

With drone attacks becoming more sophisticated worldwide – including swarm tactics and cross-border reconnaissance – the induction of laser weapons marks a proactive shift in India’s defence readiness. Once deployed, these systems will add a powerful new capability to the Army, Navy and Air Force, enhancing India’s preparedness against evolving aerial threats.
