Top Putin Aide Claims Ukraine War Could End Within a Year
Kremlin’s top financial envoy expresses optimism about a possible end to the Ukraine conflict, signaling a potential shift in Moscow’s diplomatic tone.

A senior aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that the ongoing war in Ukraine could come to an end within the next year, hinting at possible diplomatic progress behind the scenes.
Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and one of Putin’s close economic advisors, made the remarks during an investment conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Dmitriev, who recently returned from a visit to the United States, suggested that both Washington and Moscow are moving closer to a diplomatic solution that could de-escalate the conflict.
“We are confident that peace is on the horizon. I believe the conflict could end within a year,” Dmitriev stated, reflecting a notably optimistic tone rarely heard from top Russian officials since the invasion began in February 2022.
The remarks come amid renewed speculation about backchannel discussions between Russia, the U.S., and several Middle Eastern nations that have maintained communication with both sides throughout the war. Dmitriev also praised the growing cooperation between Russia, the United States, and Saudi Arabia – three major energy powers – emphasizing that coordination among them could help stabilize global markets and promote peace.
However, Western analysts remain cautious. Many experts believe the statement may be part of Moscow’s strategic messaging rather than a concrete signal of upcoming negotiations. The war, which has entered its fourth year, continues to see heavy fighting along the frontlines in eastern and southern Ukraine.
Still, Dmitriev’s comments have stirred hope that diplomatic engagement could resume in the coming months, particularly as the economic and humanitarian toll of the war continues to mount across both nations and beyond.
Whether this optimism will translate into real progress remains uncertain, but the message marks one of the most positive signals yet from within the Russian establishment about the possibility of ending Europe’s deadliest conflict in decades.
