Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty assumes command of Andaman & Nicobar Command

Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty has assumed charge as the 20th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (ANC), according to the Press Information Bureau. The appointment marks a significant leadership transition at India’s tri-service unified command responsible for one of the nation’s most strategically critical maritime regions.
The Andaman & Nicobar Command, headquartered at Port Blair, is the only tri-service command of the Indian Armed Forces and operates across a vast expanse of the Indian Ocean, covering the waters and islands of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago. The command integrates naval, air force, and army assets to project power, conduct surveillance, and maintain maritime security in this crucial operational theatre.
As Commander-in-Chief, Vice Admiral McCarty will oversee operations across one of India’s most geographically dispersed and strategically significant areas. The ANC plays a vital role in India’s broader Indo-Pacific strategy, maintaining presence in sea lanes that witness over a third of global maritime trade and managing a territory spanning over 2.2 million square kilometres of ocean.
The command structure reflects India’s emphasis on integrated operations in the maritime domain. Unlike the Army, Navy, and Air Force which operate as individual service branches, the ANC brings all three services under unified command to enable coordinated responses to emerging security challenges in the eastern Indian Ocean region.
Vice Admiral McCarty’s tenure will coincide with India’s ongoing modernisation of its maritime infrastructure and expansion of operational capabilities in the region. The ANC has been instrumental in anti-piracy operations, disaster relief missions, and maintaining freedom of navigation in international waters.
The appointment underscores the Indian Navy’s role in shaping India’s strategic posture in the Indo-Pacific. The command’s significance has grown as India seeks to strengthen its presence and partnerships across Southeast Asia and the broader region, particularly given evolving geopolitical dynamics and the strategic importance of the Strait of Malacca and surrounding waters.
Vice Admiral McCarty brings operational experience from previous postings within the Indian Navy. His command of the ANC reflects the Navy’s confidence in senior leadership capable of managing the complex tri-service coordination and diplomatic dimensions required at this strategically vital command.
