Admiral Swaminathan’s Sydney Engagement Strengthens India-Australia Naval Cooperation

Indian Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan met Australian Fleet Commander Rear Admiral Anita Williams at HMAS Kuttabul in Sydney on September 10, 2026, as part of his official visit to Australia and New Zealand. The engagement focused on strengthening cooperation and interoperability between the Indian Navy and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), with discussions covering Australia’s evolving fleet capabilities, future inductions and opportunities for greater operational interaction.

During the meeting, the two naval leaders discussed avenues for enhancing practical cooperation between their respective forces. Admiral Swaminathan was also given a familiarisation tour of HMAS Kuttabul, providing an overview of the Royal Australian Navy’s fleet infrastructure and operational capabilities. The Sydney engagement is part of Admiral Swaminathan’s official visit to Australia and New Zealand, which began on September 9. The Ministry of Defence said the visit is aimed at further strengthening bilateral cooperation between the Indian Navy, the Royal Australian Navy and the Royal New Zealand Navy. During the Australia leg, the Chief of the Naval Staff is engaging with senior naval and defence leadership while reviewing ongoing cooperation and exploring opportunities to strengthen operational interaction, interoperability, information sharing, training and professional exchanges.

The visit also builds on the recent momentum in India-Australia relations following the Third India-Australia Annual Summit held in July 2026 and the Second India-Australia Defence Ministers’ Dialogue held in June 2026. Defence and maritime security have remained important areas of cooperation between the two countries as they seek to contribute to peace, security and stability across the Indo-Pacific.

For the Indian Navy and Royal Australian Navy, greater interoperability and regular operational engagement are important for building a stronger understanding between the two forces. Discussions on evolving maritime capabilities, future fleet inductions and professional exchanges also reflect the expanding scope of bilateral naval cooperation.

Admiral Swaminathan’s Australia visit is being followed by engagements in New Zealand, where he is scheduled to meet senior naval and defence officials. The New Zealand leg will focus on operational cooperation, information sharing, training and professional exchanges, further reflecting India’s broader effort to strengthen maritime partnerships with key Indo-Pacific countries.
