Tapas UAV Test Flight Crash Shakes Chitradurga, Karnataka

Story Highlights
  • TAPAS is the DRDO's answer to the needs of the armed forces for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, Tracking, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR).
  • TAPAS, which used to be called Rustom-II, is made to fly on its own or with the help of a remote control based on pre-programmed flight plans.

On Sunday morning, people in the village of Vaddikere, Hiriyur taluk, Chitradurga district, saw an unmanned testing drone called Tapas (Tactical Airborne Platform for Aerial Surveillance-Beyond Horizon) crash into a peanut field. This was a strange thing to see.

As soon as word got out that the UAV had crashed, a lot of people from the village came to Siddappa’s field to look at the wreckage. No one got hurt because no one was on the field at the time.

Tapas 07A-14, a medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle made by the DRDO, took off for a test flight in the morning from the DRDO site at Kudhapura near Nayakanahatti Science City in Challakere. Soon after that, though, the experts lost control of the UAV, which caused it to crash.

Superintendent of Police K. Parashuram told The New Indian Express that the UAV was on a test run. When they got there, the police and DRDO teams helped the scientists find the car. Villagers who saw the crash told the cops, who quickly went to the scene.

Probe on to know why drone crashed

The locals took pictures and videos of the UAV, which show that it is completely broken and that its parts are all over the field. “DRDO is briefing the Defense Ministry, and an investigation is being done to find out why the crash happened,” said sources.

DRDO wrote on X, which used to be called Twitter, “TAPAS UAV was doing a test flight this morning from ATR Challakere, Karnataka. During the trip, the UAV ran into a technical problem, and it crashed into a nearby farm. The scientific reason is being looked into, and there has been no damage to other things.”

TAPAS — DRDO’s Made in India UAV

TAPAS-BH UAV, which stands for Tactical Aerial Platform for Advanced Surveillance – Beyond Horizon, is a medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle made in India. At Aero India 2023, it took off for the first time. Both on the ground and in the air, displays showed what it could do.

TAPAS is the DRDO’s answer to the needs of the armed forces for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, Tracking, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR). The UAV can stay in the air for more than 18 hours and fly as high as 28,000 feet. TAPAS, which used to be called Rustom-II, is made to fly on its own or with the help of a remote control based on pre-programmed flight plans. Because it is so versatile, it can work both during the day and at night.
