Manipur: 4 UNLF Cadres Arrested, Internet Ban Extended

On Monday, police in Manipur’s Thoubal district caught four people they thought were members of the banned rebel group United National Liberation Front. Indian Army Spearcorps says that they were caught with a 51 mm mortar and turned over to the cops.

Sources say that after this, hundreds of locals gathered outside the police station to demand that they be set free. On Tuesday, they were set free on bail.

The UNLF is the largest group of Meitei rebels.

In the meantime, on Tuesday, the government of Manipur shut down the internet in the state for five more days, until June 25. Since May 3, when the first fight broke out, Internet services in the state have been shut down.

Since the situation is still too unstable to return to “normalcy,” the government has pushed back the start of school until July 1.
