India’s Pinaka Rocket Programme Gains Momentum With 4,000-Rocket Order Pipeline
India’s indigenous Pinaka rocket artillery programme is approaching a significant milestone, with around 4,000 rockets reportedly moving through the procurement pipeline. The anticipated requirements include approximately 2,000 rockets for the Indian Army and another 2,000 intended for export to Armenia. The development highlights India’s growing capabilities in domestic ammunition production and its expanding position in the international defence market.
According to information disclosed by Apollo Micro Systems management during its latest earnings call, procurement activities for the Indian Army’s proposed requirement have progressed through the request-for-quotation (RFQ), bidding and negotiation stages. The company indicated that the contracts could be awarded before the end of December 2026, subject to the completion of the required procurement procedures.
The anticipated programme is expected to create opportunities for several Indian defence manufacturers, including Munitions India Limited (MIL) and Solar Industries India. Apollo Micro Systems has also confirmed its participation in the quotation process as part of the wider supply chain. The final allocation of manufacturing responsibilities and individual contract shares, however, remains subject to official decisions.
The domestic requirement of approximately 2,000 rockets is expected to support the Indian Army’s ongoing artillery modernisation efforts. Strengthening ammunition availability is particularly important for maintaining sustained operational readiness and improving the Army’s ability to deliver concentrated firepower during military operations.
The proposed export requirement of another 2,000 rockets highlights the growing defence relationship between India and Armenia. Armenia has emerged as an important international customer for Indian-made military equipment and was the first foreign country to acquire the Pinaka rocket launcher system.
India has already taken significant steps towards supplying advanced Pinaka ammunition to Armenia. On January 18, 2026, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh flagged off the first tranche of Guided Pinaka rockets at Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited’s manufacturing facility in Nagpur. The development marked an important achievement for India’s indigenous defence manufacturing and export ambitions.
Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Pinaka is a multi-barrel rocket launcher system designed to deliver rapid and concentrated rocket fire against enemy positions and military targets. Its modular architecture supports different rocket variants, allowing the system to evolve with improvements in range, accuracy and operational capabilities.
The programme also demonstrates the increasing contribution of India’s private defence industry alongside established public-sector manufacturers. Greater participation from domestic companies is expected to strengthen production capacity, support technological development and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers for critical military equipment.
If the anticipated contracts are finalised, the 4,000-rocket pipeline could become an important milestone for India’s artillery ammunition manufacturing sector. It would also reinforce the country’s efforts to establish itself as a reliable supplier of indigenous defence systems to international partners.
However, the expected orders should not be confused with officially signed contracts. Final contract awards, production allocations and delivery schedules have yet to be formally confirmed. Further announcements from the concerned companies and procurement authorities will determine how the proposed programme progresses.
